Murray beats Youzhny 6-3, 6-2 to win Valencia Open
VALENCIA, Spain (AP)—Andy Murray won his sixth title of the season Sunday in his first tournament back from a wrist injury, beating Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-3, 6-2 in the Valencia Open final.
The fourth-ranked Scot hadn’t played since the U.S. Open in September. He broke twice in each set and served eight aces to improve to 2-0 against the 23rd-ranked Youzhny.
“I’d say it was a little easier than I had expected, but he is a tough player,” Murray said. “I didn’t have high expectations this week, but with every round and match you get more confident. It is very rare for someone to win a tournament after a long break.”
With both players stretched to three-set semifinals on Saturday, Murray believed fatigue played a factor.
“I knew the start of the match was going to be important and I started well, going up 5-1 pretty quickly,” he said.
Murray won 26 of 29 first-serve points as he improved his indoor record to 12-0 this season. Having saved two of three break points in the first set, Murray jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second by dictating play from the baseline. He closed out the victory with an ace.

I was pulling for Verdasco to win as I am not a Murray fan, now I'll be pulling for Mikhail to pull the upset! It's always so nice to see Alex Corretga (sp) on the sidelines..but now in his role as coach!!! A great Spanish Warrior!!! Enjoyed watching him play for years :-)
This tennis arena in Valencia is gorgeous!!! The outside looks like Australia's Opera House..it's truly amazing!
Good luck to the Russian tomorrow, hope he can take advantage, be opportunistic and win this final!!

I know PART of it is because of the grueling schedule and the time of year, but to me it does seem this year is by far the worst in a long time. Men's and women's side! While I KNOW it's been horrible for the players, it's been hard on true tennis fans, just watching them try to play in pain & push through it.
I so much enjoy watch Jo Wilfried play! He has so much determination and can really move for a "big" man~I surely hope his wrist mends quickly allowing him to play early in next year's season!
I'm wishing him much rest and recuperation time and great success in 2010 :-)

I wish people would stop calling him "old" because he is balding. He isn't old! My best friend in college started balding his freshman year! It's called genes & he still, at 61, doesn't look old!! All this image thing is so misguided.
No one ever called Andre bald~at least with a negative connotation. Perhaps they should have since we now know there weren't enough Bobby Pins in all of Paris to secure his hair-piece and that the thought of losing his "hair" consumed his thoughts all match long that day! Talk about vanity!!!!! One simply cannot remain humble when consumed by vanity. Too much (inner) conflict~vanity will win every single time~
Much continued success to Nikolay as he advances to the second round :-)
